Vincent Neal, co-founder of Travels and Curiosities, has been teaching financial literacy out in the community for over 10 years for roles in credit unions across the United States. His experience working within the credit union movement has taught him to become a fiercely dedicated saver without sacrificing day-to-day happiness and living life to the fullest. In fact, his savings practices as introduced in this section are exactly what allow us to travel as much as we do. And the good news is, they aren’t difficult or tricky habits to adopt. They’re simple and straightforward, and they’ll have you saving for your next adventure in no time.

how I learned to save

Like many of you, I’ve been planning dream vacations and weekend getaways for as long as I can remember. Over the years, I routinely settled for stay-cations because I felt like I could never afford to do anything else. Our goal is to share the simple changes we’ve made in order to travel often and not go broke in the process.

The advent of high-speed internet and easily accessible Wi-Fi has been changing our culture for well over a decade now. Many of the innovations of the digital age allow us to not only manage our money better, but in many cases have lead to entirely new careers that allow people to work wherever and whenever. The idea of becoming digital nomads and working remotely while traveling the world is definitely one of our long-term goals and much of the content will be centered around that idea plus off-grid living solutions. We’re big fans of the mortgage-free movement!

We’ll be exploring personal finance from a variety of perspectives including saving strategies, reducing your debt, and traveling on the cheap. Many financial lessons I learned the hard way, by making uninformed mistakes like most young adults. The other tips we’ll be sharing with you I learned during the 13-plus years I’ve spent working in the credit union industry… or as many of us devotees like to say "the movement". Please note that I’m not a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and do not provide investment advice. Having said that, I have taught hundreds of financial education classes over the years and hope that you can implement some of our practices into your own life. We sincerely hope that our suggestions will help you achieve your own travel goals.

Here’s to saving more and traveling often.

Cheers,
