We first discovered cordwood after staying at The Mermaid Cottage, a gorgeous casita in Del Norte, Colorado. The couple rents the colorful cottage on Airbnb for $189/night, but it only cost them $5,000 to build. And as cool as The Mermaid Cottage is, it was more the affordability of cordwood that caught our attention. Because when we talk about sustainability, we’re also thinking about it from a cost perspective as well. If you’re like us and you live in an area with a high cost of living, it can feel financially unsustainable to keep up with an ever-rising rent payment. Why not buy a house, you ask? Everyone’s different in their approaches and opinions on this, but the idea of shoveling our savings into a downpayment just to have a huge mortgage that could take decades to pay off isn’t for us. We want to buy something in cash… or in this case, build something with the cash we have on hand.
