Five Easy Ways to Save this Fall

In last week’s email we shared strategies for how to kickstart your savings in just one week. As the autumn leaves change and cooler weather sets in, we wanted to share some additional tips to help you save this Fall Season.

Prepare Seasonal Meals at Home

Nothing reminds me more of Fall then a warm cup of soup or gravy-smothered poutine. Not only are they comforting, but these foods can also be very budget-friendly. Before you head out for your next trip to the grocery store or farmers market, take a moment to think of your favorite Fall dishes, and consider ones that could also provide leftovers throughout the week. Bust out the crockpot and make a batch of hearty chili or one of my personal favorites… bacon-wrapped meatloaf with a side of garlic parmesan mashed potatoes. Yum!

2. Sell Your Summer Clothes

As you begin pulling out warm sweaters and winter coats, spend a moment to go through your summer wardrobe. If you had any articles of clothing that you only wore a handful of times or less, consider selling them on websites and apps like ThredUP or Poshmark. Take those extra funds and put them towards your next weekend getaway.

3. Open Your Windows

Constantly running your AC all summer can be a major drain on your budget. Now that the summer heat is gone and it’s not quite cold enough to turn the heat on, give your heating and cooling expenses a break by opening some windows. It’s also a good time of year to winterize your home by checking the seals around your windows and doors or consider making improvements to your insulation.

4. Open Enrollment Season

For many employers, fall is also their open enrollment season. Consider reviewing your options this year to see if you (or your spouse) could potentially save money by changing your plan. A Health Savings Account (HSA) can be a great money-saving option if your employer offers one, especially if they provide matching contributions. There may also be additional benefits than can provide you extra savings such as discounts for local gym memberships, daycare options, tuition reimbursements, and other healthcare services.

5. Plan your Holiday Budget

One of the easiest ways to make sure you’re prepared for the financial burden of the holidays is to have a dedicated “Holiday Savings” account with a small portion of your direct deposit going into it all year-round.

The next step is to start creating a holiday budget in the Fall instead of waiting until the last minute wondering how you’re going to pay for holiday-related expenses. The cost of gifts, decorations, holiday meals, and even travel can quickly add up, and the last thing you want to do is charge them on credit cards. Start planning now and be sure to stick to your budget… especially during sales like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
